Tapestry, hand embroidery

The landscape depicted in the tapestry is one of the most recognizable postcard views of Venice. This place is overloaded with history, cultural layers, and has long been inseparably associated with the regular celebrations of the cultural elite. The theme of feasting during the plague is as old as the world. And the balance of human civilization's existence seems to be partly built on the fact that when there is war on one edge of the earth, there is festivity on the other. (Even if these are different edges of Europe, not continents spread across the planet.)

Venice itself is a monument to the transience of existence. People are inclined to be drawn to places doomed to destruction by time. Indulging in romance in a doomed city and engaging in career-boosting schmoozing is a much more attractive prospect than facing reality.
